Fibrosis in IBD: A Challenge We Can’t Ignore

On 6 February 2025, EFCCA brought together top researchers, industry experts and patient advocates for a webinar on intestinal fibrosis in IBD—an issue that too often gets overlooked. This session was part of the FIBROTARGET project (Horizon Europe), which is working to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fibrosis and fibrostenosis in IBD.

Experts from the project like Prof. Severine Vermeire (KU Leuven University), Prof. Alessandro Armuzzi (Humanitas Research Hospital), and Prof. Raja Atreya (University Hospital of Erlangen) broke down the science behind fibrosis—how it happens, why it’s such a challenge, and what can be done to tackle it.

On the innovation front, Tim Van Kaem from Agomab shared promising news about a new drug in development that directly targets fibrosis, offering hope for better treatments.

But what truly brought the issue home were the stories from Anastasia Ntanou (Greece) and Frieda Wiedma (Belgium), two IBD patients living with fibrosis. They shared the daily struggles, the uncertainty and the urgent need for better care. Their voices reinforced why research projects like FIBROTARGET are so crucial.

At EFCCA, we’ll keep pushing to make sure fibrosis in IBD gets the attention—and action—it deserves. Stay tuned for updates as the project moves forward!
